A Gala to Celebrate the Launch of a Scholarship Campaign for UNCG’s Beyond Academics Program

Date/Time: April 26, 2017 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Location/Address: Virginia Dare Room, Alumni House

404 College Avenue, Greensboro, NC

A Celebration of Ten Years and a Scholarship Campaign Launch

This gala celebrates 10 years of the innovative, award winning Beyond Academics, UNCG’s comprehensive transition program for individuals with intellectual disabilities. As NC’s first and only 4 year certificate program and only one of just a few 4 year programs in the entire country, this fully inclusive academic and residential experience makes it possible for young adults with intellectual disabilities to attend college, expand their ability to live independently, to obtain a career of their choice and to craft a meaningful life in the community of their choice. For UNCG, the program of study has increased the understanding of the benefits of all kinds of diversity for others who share the experience with them on campus. It is also a look forward to a more accessible and sustainable future. Proceeds from sponsorships and tickets will be directed to the UNCG Beyond Academics Scholarship Fund. Your contribution will make this transformative experience possible for more students. Your donations are tax deductible.

Keynote Speakers

Rud and Ann TurnbullThe Keynote speakers Rud and Ann Turnbull have been professors, researchers, and advocates for individuals with disabilities, their families, and service providers for over four decades. Between them, they have authored over 40 books. In 1999, they were selected by the National Preservation Trust in Developmental Disabilities as two of 36 individuals who have “changed the course of history for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the 20th century.” Their greatest learning has come from their son, Jay Turnbull (1967-2009), whom they have always called their “best professor” about the needs of individuals with significant disabilities over the lifespan.

This event launches a campaign to raise $l.5 Million towards scholarships – to make it possible for more students to benefit from this amazing program. Without financial aid, this program is simply not available to very many students.

Honoring the Founders

The founders of Beyond Academics will also be honored for their roles in the development and growth of this program. UNCG’s Beyond Academics has rapidly become a leader in the post-secondary education national movement, supporting others in in creating these opportunities in their communities. The unique collaborative partnership between UNCG and a nonprofit support organization has made this program what it is today.

The evening will include dinner and perspectives of students, family members, UNCG staff and private non-profit Board representatives
